JERUSALEM: Palestinians continue protests as Erdogan seeks annulment of decision

The decision by Washington to recognise Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel has continued to generate demonstrations and criticism around the world especially in Palestine.

Reports say scores of dismayed Palestinians took to the streets to demonstrate after concluding Friday prayers at the Al Aqsa mosque in Occupied East Jerusalem, but were prevented from entering the Old City by barricades put up by Israelis.

Protests against the decision ratified by President Donald Trump were also recorded in Ramallah and in Bethlehem, where protesters faced off with Israeli soldiers and in the Indian city of Mumbai, the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, and in the Japanese capital, Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to push for the decision to be rescinded.

Speaking to crowds gathered in the central Anatolian city of Konya via teleconference, Erdogan said Turkey would first seek annulment of the move in the Security Council, and if that failed it would try at the UN General Assembly.

Meanwhile, the decision by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to declare East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine has been rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Reacting to the declaration by the OIC, Netanyahu said that “all these statements fail to impress us”.

“The truth will win in the end and many countries will certainly recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and also move their embassies,” he added in response to the comments made by Muslim leaders during the OIC’s emergency summit in Istanbul.

Members of the OIC made the pronouncement recognising East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine in a draft declaration during a summit of the Muslim leaders in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday and also striped President Donald Trump the role of a peacemaker in the region.
