Hundreds of air travelers, who could not connect flights to their destinations have remained stranded at the various airports in Nigeria, following airlines’ inability to get aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1.

Worst affected are holiday makers from outside the country, many of whom were seen on Monday slugging it out with other passengers for seats in a few available airlines rendering services .

The situation was not helped by the fact that most booking counters of the airlines had remained shut since over the weekend.

A ticket officer of Air Peace, who took time to explain the situation to the aggrieved travelers had it rough as some of her audience, who said they had slept at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja since Saturday shouted her down.

The situation was the same at Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kano airports .

“I’ve never experienced this since I’ve been returning for Christmas in the past five years, government should wade into the situation or else, holiday makers will regret coming back home, ” lamented Sylvester Akari, who said he came with his family from Germany for their holidays to be spent at the South East part of the country.

Arik Air had last week hinted on the jet A1 issue and had apologized to passengers to bear with them in the current circumstance.

The spokesman of the airlines, Adebanji Ola, said his airline was still searching for fuel as his airline was experiencing the worst impact of the scarcity compared to other airlines.

He said on a daily basis, supply should approximately be 500,000 liters of Jet-A1 for its operations, but it has been getting less than 200,000 in the past one week, which has severely impacted the scheduled flight operations.

But neither the Aviation Ministry nor NNPC seem to be doing anything to help the situation.
