Jigawa assembly lawmakers tussle over new leadership

As the tenure of the current assembly approaches its end, tension is brewing in the Jigawa State House of Assembly over who emerges as the next speaker.

The current state assembly expires June 10. Despite the time ahead before the new assembly, late night meetings both in the state and the neighboring Kano and Bauchi states were said to be the business that dominated the activities of the newly elected members of the state assembly.

Some of the 30 members of the assembly, who are all members of the All Progressive Congress (APC), are believed to making drastic efforts to return the former speaker, Idris Garba aka Kareka, to his former position.

However, there are conflicting reports, suggesting that the present speaker, Isa Idris must be shown the way out for his alleged inability to give the assembly a robust leadership while on the other hand, the plan for his removal is also alleged to be the machination of the executive arm of the government as Kareka appears to be the preferred speaker.

It would be recalled that the former speaker, was impeached in January 2017 over what the assembly members described as high-handedness and abuse of power.
