Jigawa Fuel Tanker Explosion: Former VP Atiku calls for rail transport alternative

A devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has claimed the lives of scores of people, prompting an outpouring of grief and calls for change.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, expressed his sorrow over the incident, through a post on X.

He stated, “I am saddened by reports of the death of scores of people in a petrol tanker explosion.”

This tragic event is the latest in a series of petrol tanker explosions to hit the country, leading many to question the safety protocols in place for transporting petroleum products.

Atiku Abubakar emphasized the need for alternative transportation methods, saying, “It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country.”

He also advocated for better training for drivers handling flammable products and a review of the transportation protocol.

The human cost of this disaster is staggering, with reports suggesting over 90 lives lost. The former Vice President extended his condolences to the people and government of Jigawa State, urging an “expeditious rescue and control operation” and emphasizing that “no resource should be spared in treating the injured.”

As the nation mourns this tragic loss, Atiku Abubakar’s words resonate deeply: “I sympathize with families that have lost dear ones to this tragic incident and pray that they be comforted and that the deceased find eternal rest.”
