Jigawa toes path of Abia, Rivers, impeaches speaker, elects new one

The wind of impeachment of state House of Assembly Speakers which hit Abia on December 29 and Rivers on December 30 has now landed in Jigawa.

Reports indicate that the Speaker of the state Assembly, Idris Garba, was on Tuesday impeached and another lawmaker, Isa Idris, elected in his place as the new Speaker.

The now former Speaker, Garba, was impeached following the announcement of the Clerk of the House, Hussaini Ali, that he received an impeachment notice signed by 25 of the 30 Assembly members.

Deputy Speaker Ahmed Garba who presided over the sitting, which was attended by 23 members, read the impeachment notice on the floor of the House, where he affirmed that indeed 25 out of the 30 members of the House signed the notice.

The Deputy Speaker, on the argument that the 30 members who signed the impeachment notice had reached the constitutional condition of two third to impeach any of its principal officers, then declared the seat of the Speaker vacant and ordered for a fresh election to pick a new speaker.

Two members, Isa Dutse, representing Dutse Municipal constituency and Isa Idris, who represents Gwaram constituency were later nominated to be elected into the office of the speaker.

After members casted their votes, Isa Idris polled 12 votes to defeat Isa Dutse, who got six votes. Five members did not vote.

According to the House Clerk, Mr. Ali, the former Speaker was impeached on the accusation of being overbearing and misuse of power.
