John Terry is the greatest captain in Chelsea history --Joe Cole

Ex-Chelsea midfielder, Joe Cole, has heaped praises on his compatriot and former team-mate, John Terry, naming him the greatest captain in the history of the reigning Premier League champions.

36-year-old Terry, who commonly plays as a centre-back, recently ended his 18-year stay with the Blues and is reportedly close to agreeing a deal with Aston Villa.

Cole, who enjoyed seven seasons with Terry at Stamford Bridge (between 2003 and 2010) as well as playing together for the England national team, is in no doubt what a big personality he (Terry) was, adding that it will be tough to replace him.

“He is the greatest captain in the club’s history, that’s for sure,” Cole told Goal.

“It is going to be a big miss for the club, I am sure the people will have an idea of what they can do to replace him but he might be one of those players that you don’t realise the void until he is gone.

“It is going to be tough to replace him. He has had a magic career. He has got many good years ahead of him, I am sure. He is one of the greatest, for sure. Time will be kind on JT, what he has achieved and his longevity as well. He is one of the greats – a top, top player.”

As Chelsea’s most successful captain, Terry has led the Blues to five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, one Europa League title and one UEFA Champions League title since 2004.

Terry, considered to be one of the greatest central defenders of his generation, was named UEFA Club Defender of the Year in 2005, 2008 and 2009.

“On the ball he was brilliant, he could play with both feet, his organisation [was great],” Cole continued.

“You ask any striker who has played against him and it was a complete nightmare for them. He has a great understanding of the game.

“You do’’t get into that category that he has put himself in without having all the aspects that you need. He will go down as a true warrior. Someone who made players around him better so I can’t speak highly enough of him and what he has done.”

Joe Cole is currently plying his trade with United Soccer League club Tampa Bay Rowdies. While at Chelsea, he played over 280 games in all competitions and won ten trophies before leaving in 2010 to join Liverpool.
