Juba violence: Ugandan troops cross into South Sudan to rescue trapped citizens

A day after the United Nations warned of a possibility of fresh fighting in Juba, heavily armed Ugandan troops have crossed into South Sudan to rescue citizens trapped in gun battle.

Fighting continues in the war prone country even after a two-day ceasefire that followed a major outbreak of violence, in which almost 300 people were killed.

Reports say Ugandan army convoy of around 50 lorries escorted by machine-gun-mounted armoured vehicles crossed the border on Thursday at Nimule, some 200km from Juba, to open up a secure corridor for fleeing civilians.

The United Nations also revealed in a statement that the stand-off between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and armed men loyal to first vice president and former rebel leader Riek Machar has displaced over 7,000 people.
