Jubilant Gambians welcome President Jammeh back

Scores of jubilant Gambians trooped out in their numbers to welcome President-elect Adama Barrow who arrived from Senegal after his predecessor Yahya Jammeh was forced into exile following the disputed December 1st, 2016 election.

On his arrival, Barrow was accompanied by his two wives and some of his children and while disembarking from the aircraft he was welcomed by military officials, senior members of his coalition government and other Gambians.

Barrow’s return marks the first transfer of power in Gambia and capped days of waiting after longtime leader Jammeh had refused to leave after losing a December 1 vote.

Gambians can now look forward to a fresh beginning after 22-years of Jammeh’s reign with most citizens of the tiny West African country feeling upbeat about Barrow’s administration.

“I’m 100 percent a Barrow supporter and I’m more happy than I can say,” said Kanamo Sansou, sitting with his friends at Serrekunda market close to the capital Banjul.

“He will be different in all aspects… we have been living under dictatorship for 22 years,” added pensioner Ibrahima Gaye.

“You can go home at night and sleep without worrying you will be arrested before daybreak,” he said.
