Judiciary staff call Edo govt’s bluff, stay away from office

There seems no end in sight to the impasse between the Edo State government and the state Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), over the autonomy of the judiciary in the state.

In defiance to a directive by the State Judicial Service Commission signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Isaac Sanu and dated June 9th, 2015, that all judiciary workers must resume duties today, June 10th, 2015, failing which they should consider themselves sacked, the workers did not only refused to resume duties, the executive of JUSUN, went from office to office to ensure that none of their members were at their duty posts.

Reacting to the situation, the State Chairman of JUSUN, Uyi Ogieriakhi wondered why the state government was threatening to sack the workers or compelling them to resume duties instead of obeying the Federal High Court judgment granting autonomy to the judiciary.

Comrade Ogieriakhi said no amount of intimidation or harassment will compel them to resume duties stressing that until their demands are met, the judiciary in Edo State will remain grounded.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Henry Idahagbon said contrary to the directive of the Judicial Service Commission, no worker is being forced to resume duties.

Workers in the Edo State Judiciary have been on strike since January, 2015 as a way of asking government to implement a Federal High Court ruling granting autonomy to the judiciary.

The State governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole at a point threatened to implement the no work, no pay policy as a way of bringing the workers back to work.
