June 12: Atiku’s former aide threatens Buhari with lawsuit

The Secretary of the Northern Leaders and Stakeholders Assembly, Dr. Umar Ardo, who is also a former aide to former vice president Atiku Abubakar, said on Sunday that President Muhammadu Buhari’s posthumous National Award on the late Chief MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, Presidential election, as well as the awards to his running mate, Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe, and others, amount to illegality.

The misstep, according to Ardo, was because Buhari failed to seek the advice of members of the National Council of State as stipulated by the Nigerian constitution.

Ardo therefore threatened to drag Buhari to court over the matter and for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day.

Saying that the president’s action was unconstitutional, Ardo explained in a statement in Kaduna that he had enquired of other members of the National Council of State and was informed that the president never convened any meeting for advise before embarking on the National Award and the planned investiture of the awardees.
