Senators ‘quarrel’ as Saraki moves to probe Buhari’s appointments

The Senate on Thursday reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to honour the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, also known as MKO, and his running mate, Babagana Kingibe.

The lawmakers however demanded that the President should also go further to ensure that the full result of the aborted election is declared.

Buhari had on Thursday announced June 12 as the new Democracy Day as well as said that he was going to recognise MKO as with the honour, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), which is Nigeria’s highest national honour.

Similarly he said that Kingibe would be honoured with a Grand Commander of the Order of Nigeria (GCON).

Deliberating on the matter at Senate plenary on Thursday, Senate President Bukola Saraki, while appreciating the development, noted that the recognition was long overdue.

In their responses, some senators called on Buhari to make sure that June 12 is also recognised as a national holiday, as well as mandate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce the results of the election, declare Abiola and Kingibe president and vice-president respectively, and approve the entitlements due to them.
