A 73rd-minute goal by Adamu Alhassan saw the Flying Eagles seal their place in the semifinal of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Although a draw would have been enough to help the team advance, the goal secured a victory for Nigeria over tournament hosts, Niger, on Friday evening.

The Flying Eagles, alongside other AFCON semifinalists, also qualified for the 2019 U-20 FIFA World Cup billed to hold in Poland in May.

The Paul Aigbogun boys finished top of Group A with 7 points, having won their opener against Burundi and picked up a goalless draw versus South Africa.

Hosts Niger and Burundi could not survive the group.

As it stands, South Africa will clash with Group B winners Senegal in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, th Flying Eagles will face the runners up in Group B.

Ghana and Mali occupy second and third spots in that Group, and are both in contention for a second spot as they are currently tied on the same points.
