Lalong wins Plateau governorship election

The Court of Appeal sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital on Friday affirmed the election victory of Governor Simon Lalong.

The Appellate Court dismissed the appeal filed by the governorship candidate, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Jeremiah Useni, challenging Lalong’s victory at the poll during the 2019 general election.

Useni had dragged Lalong to the Appeal Court after the Governorship Election Tribunal dismissed his appeal against Lalong’s victory.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Halima Salami, the tribunal had held that the petitioner was not able to prove his case.

The Court of Appeal in its judgment on Friday reaffirmed the earlier ruling of the tribunal that sacked Useni’s appeal.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Lalong as the winner of the election in March, after the governor polled 593,582 votes to defeat his closest rival, Useni, who polled 546,803 votes.
