‘I did not say I won’t support a northern candidate in 2023’ —El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has clarified comments he made suggesting he would not support any northern candidate vying for the presidency in 2023.

The governor was reported to have said he would only back a southerner in line with the zoning arrangement within parties in the country.

Governor El-Rufai has repeatedly said it was only fair for power to return to the south in 2023.

But responding to a question on a Channels TV programme on Sunday night regarding his stance, the governor appeared to backtrack, now claiming he never said he would not back a northerner or a southerner, but was only expressing an opinion.

Whatever his motivation, El-Rufai’s fresh comments are likely to shield him from charges of betrayal or contradiction should he decide to support a northerner in 2023.
