Embattled leader of the proscribed Igbo separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Monday, refused to appear before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in protest against the refusal of the Federal Government to obey a ruling by an Appeal Court to release him from detention.

The appellate court had, on October 13, quashed all 15 terrorism charges against the IPOB leader and discharged him, but the Federal Government, through the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, filed an appeal against the ruling.

Last week, the Federal High Court fixed Monday, November 14 for the determination on fresh charges filed by the government against the Biafran agitator.

But on resumption of the case, Kanu vehemently refused to honour the sitting on the grounds that the government had also failed to obey the October 13 ruling which ordered that he should be released from detention.

Kanu who conveyed his message to the court through his lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejimakor, stood his grounds and said he would not appear before Justice Nyako despite entreaties and appeals for him to make an appearance.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has refused to appear before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court. He is standing his ground not to appear in court until the October 13 judgment of the Court of Appeal is respected and obeyed by releasing him from the custody of the Department of the State Service, DSS, in Abuja,” he told journalists at the court premises.
