Senator Monday Okpebholo on Tuesday took the oath of office and was sworn in as the new governor of Edo State.

He takes over from Godwin Obaseki having won the recently concluded governorship election in that state.

The Chief Justice of the state, Daniel Okungbowa, administered the oath to the governor and his deputy, Denis Idahosa at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

The inauguration, marking the start of a new administration, was attended by thousands of supporters, and saw both Okpebholo and Idahosa pledge to uphold the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, promising to govern with integrity and a focus on the well-being of the state’s citizens.

“I swear to uphold the constitution and to govern with the best interests of our people at heart,” Governor Okpebholo said during his oath-taking. His words echoed the hope and enthusiasm of many Edo residents who gathered at the stadium, some of whom had traveled long distances to witness the event.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa also reaffirmed his commitment to serve the people. “I will work tirelessly to ensure that the promises made during our campaign come to fruition,” Idahosa vowed, receiving cheers and applause from the excited crowd.

The event was a defining moment for both the newly elected leaders and the state, as it marks the beginning of their tenure after a highly contested election.

Okpebholo’s victory in the governorship race was seen as a triumph for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporters are hopeful that the new administration will bring about positive change for the state, particularly in areas of infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

With the inauguration complete, the focus now shifts to the governance challenges ahead. Okpebholo and Idahosa have promised to address these challenges head-on, ensuring that Edo State progresses on a path of development and prosperity. The cheering crowds at the stadium reflected the optimism that comes with the dawn of a new political era in the state.
