CAN deplores forced marriage of Christian minors in the North

Mr. Charles Oruru, father of abducted but now freed14-year-old teenager, Ese Oruru has vowed that his family is determined to ensure that his child’s abductor, Yinusa faces the long arm of the law for the crime he committed against his daughter.

He also informed that Yinusa alias Yellow who is now in the custody of the Bayelsa State Police Command where he
committed the crime after he was transferred from the Force Headquarters in Abuja raped his daughter and he is going to continue to press for charges until justice is served.

Speaking after visiting his daughter who is still at the Police Officers’ Mess in Yenagoa in the company of his two sons, Mr. Charles said; “My daughter is pregnant. Everything you read about her is true. She was raped. This is a case of rape because she is a minor. We are going to pursue this matter and the law will take its full course.

“God knows why he allowed it to happen. But we believe that it will be better at last. I don’t want to talk further now. I will talk in due cause.”

The Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson who met with the Oruru’s at the Government House in Yenagoa said everything will be done to ensure that Ese recovers from her trauma in good time.

While describing the incident as unfortunate, Governor Seriake called for a thorough investigation into the matter while also thanking the media and civil society groups for the role they played in ensuring that Ese was freed.

“We, as a government, are seeing this matter as one of law enforcement; the rights of a young girl, innocent childhood, her right to proper development and her right to grow up in the company of her parents and also practice for now the faith of her parents. A lot has happened.”

In the same vein, Solomon Arase, the Inspector General of Police has informed that if investigations found him wanting, Yinusa’s father will be prosecuted for declaring his son did no harm by eloping with Ese, though he was not the mastermind of the abduction.

A statement also released yesterday by Ikechukwu Ani, Head Press and Public Relations Unit of the Police Service Commission (PSC) in Abuja noted that any officer found to be involved in the abduction of Ese would be dismissed from the Police Force.

“The Commission will not hesitate to sanction any Police Officer no matter how highly placed who is found culpable in the abduction saga of 14 year old Ese Oruru who was said to have been abducted and forced into marriage in Kano.

“The Commission is waiting on the on-going investigation of some police officers on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, and will ensure that any police officer who is found to have compromised himself either by omission or commission in the saga will be flushed out.”
