Kabila insists DRC elections will hold Dec. 30 amid fears he wants to hang on to power

President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo insists elections in his country will go ahead on December 30 despite doubts over his plan to leave power.

Kabila revealed that much in an interview with Al Jazeera, and also rejected opposition claims that he is delaying polls to extend his stay in office.

“The date has now been fixed, the 30th of December,” Kabila told Al Jazeera on Thursday, in an interview at the presidential palace in Kinshasa. “I believe that elections will take place on that particular date.”

In a related development, protesters angry over a delay in the presidential election in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) Beni city have ransacked an Ebola centre, according to residents.

The centre housed patients suspected of having the deadly viral disease before the confirmed cases are transferred to an isolation centre.
