Son Heung-Min made the difference for Tottenham Hotspur as they beat Manchester City 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

Spurs, who lost star striker Harry Kane to an ankle injury sustained in the heat of the game, kept up their pace to seal victory at home.

City had the first clear chance to go into the lead when they earned a penalty through VAR following a handball by Danny Rose early in the firsthalf.

But Sergio Aguero’s spot-kick was well saved by keeper Hugo Lloris, before Son sealed the game with a sweet goal on 78 minutes.

Speaking after the game, goalscorer Son said: “As a team we never give up, we fight until 90 minutes. I think we deserved to win, we were more clinical than them.

“I like this stadium, it is amazing to play here, I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this stadium.”

City must now overturn the narrow deficit at Etihad Stadium when both sides meet in the second leg on April 17.

At Anfield, Liverpool defeated FC Porto 2-0 to stay in commanding lead of the tie.

Naby Keita put the Reds in front in just the fifth minute when his shot from the edge of the penalty area deflected in off Oliver Torres.

Although Porto did create chances, the hosts continued to add pressure on the Portuguese side, and it paid off as Roberto Firmino added another goal on 26 minutes.

The Brazilian tapped home from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross after Jordan Henderson’s fine ball from midfield.

During the game, Mohamed Salah could have been sent off late on for a high tackle with his studs on to Danilo Pereira’s shin but after a VAR review no foul was given.

The victory was Jurgen Klopp’s 400th win as a manager in all club competitions, 111 of which have been with Liverpool (180 with Borussia Dortmund, 109 with Mainz).

They play at Porto in the second leg in two weeks’ time.
