Governors of states in the North-West part of the country on Wednesday announced the closure of all schools in the zone for 30 days.

The governors, who took the decision after a closed-door meeting held in Kaduna, said it had become necessary following the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Katsina recorded its first case of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by governors Aminu Masari (Katsina), Bello Matawalle (Zamfara), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Abubakar Bello (Niger).

The Kano Deputy Governor, Nasiru Gawuna, represented Governor Abdullahi Ganduje at the meeting.

Masari, who is the chairman of the region’s governors’ forum, read the communiqué shortly after the meeting.

He said the closure would take effect from March 23.

Masari said the governors would meet with examination boards to discuss the schools’ closure.
