Kano Speaker resigns over alleged N100m bribe to scuttle Emir’s probe

Kano State House of Assembly Speaker Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, on Monday resigned his position over allegations that he received a N100 million bribe to scuttle the probe of Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

There have been accusations that the former speaker allegedly got N100 million from Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, which he allegedly kept to himself to the anger of the lawmakers.

While the former Speaker had denied the allegation, it was however learnt that he decided to tender his resignation letter and bow out honorably instead of being sacked by the angry lawmakers who were out to ensure he was booted out. Many of the Assembly members were said not to be satisfied with his denial.

His resignation letter was read at plenary of the House on Monday which was presided over by his deputy, Ibrahim Chidariof.

Reading the letter, the deputy speaker, explained that Rurum resigned to protect his image due to allegations bordering on corruption leveled against him by some of the members.

Soon after the reading of the letter and its acknowledgement by the lawmakers, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Alhaji Abdullahi Atta was elected as the Assembly new Speaker.

Atta represents Fagge constituency. He was nominated for the position by Babangida Yakudima and Zubairu Mamuda and became Speaker after his nomination was unanimously accepted by all the lawmakers including Rurum.

This is an obvious proof that he was truly bribed. If he didn’t get himself involved in bribery, then why resign? Rendering resignation in this situation is not an honorable thing to do.

I respect his decision, he’s indeed a true leader. His regination is better and will save him some embarrassment that may arise in the house. Welcome Sir

He’s a coward that was why he resigned. Since he claimed not to be involved in bribery, he ought to remain in the house as the speaker to face whateverbtrouble the senator want to give him.

Point of correction, it’s not senators but Honourables in the Kano state house of Assembly. Seem you are reading the story with your nose that you don’t know the different between Honourables and senators

Funny resignation. He is a greedy man. Why can’t he share probably #50m among his colleagues and eat the remaining half? Serve him right

He said he didn’t collect any bribe from Dangote and Dangote never said he bribed him too. So no need to believe the noisy lawmakers who wanted him resigned.
