Kanu backs hosts Morocco to win 2025 Nations Cup
Nigerian football legend Nwankwo Kanu has backed Morocco to host and win next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The last and only time Morocco won the competition was in 1976, but Kanu believes the North Africans have what it takes to repeat the feat in 2025.
In a chat with Le Site Info, Kanu said the Atlas Lions currently have some of the best players in Europe.
The former Arsenal star also lauded the revolution in Moroccan football, emphasizing that the team’s achievements are the result of years of hard work.
Recall that Morocco became the first African team to reach the semifinal of a FIFA World Cup after they defeated Portugal in the quarters of the 2022 World Cup.
“Morocco has always boasted great players playing in Europe,” Kanu said.

“But this generation is unparalleled. Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi. The technicality and talent of the entire squad give this team the status of a clear favourite for the upcoming AFCON.
“I played against Morocco in the AFCON tournaments of 2000 and 2004. They always enter the competition as favorites but often fail to fulfill the dreams of millions of Moroccans.
“By hosting the AFCON at home, Morocco has every chance to be crowned champion.
“I truly believe that the Atlas Lions will not let the next AFCON slip away, especially since the Kingdom will be the host nation,” he added.
The qualifiers for the competition are currently on, and the Super Eagles lead their qualifying group, having won a game and drawn another. They take on Libya today (Friday) in Uyo.
