Super Eagles legend, Nwankwo Kanu has expressed gratitude to Russian authorities after they helped recover the $11,000 that was stolen from his luggage in Moscow.

Kanu, who was in Russia for a friendly match organised by FIFA, had his money stolen from his suitcase at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport after arriving from London.

He immediately informed the authorities before heading off to the pitch for the game, which his own side, FIFA Legends, won 6-4 against Russian Legends.

The Russian Police later detained two baggage handlers who were unloading luggage from the London flight. They confiscated the money and it was returned to the Nigerian on his way back home the following day.

Speaking to KweséESPN, Kanu explained that he was shocked when he discovered he had been robbed, but says he was impressed by the speed at which the Russian authorities handled the matter and recovered the fund.

“As soon as I got to the hotel and opened my suitcase, I knew something was wrong. When I opened the second bag, it was the same thing, I was in shock,” he said.

“Throughout the game, they were keeping me updated with their progress. That is how I knew they had found those responsible for it.”

He added: “I was impressed by the way they handled everything. It didn’t even take up to one day. In some places, they might have been going round and round and nothing would come out of it.

“But these guys were very professional and I am relieved that they resolved everything so quickly.”
