Kanu’s kinsman sues FG, demands IPOB leader’s repatriation from UK

Ugochukwu Kenneth, an indigene of Abia State where the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu is from, has approached a Federal High Court in Abuja and prayed it to compel the Federal Government to bring Kanu back to the country from the United Kingdom.

Kenneth’s suit was based on the alleged report that Kanu, who is currently being prosecuted on alleged treasonable offence, had fled to the UK and the fears that if he was not brought back his sureties may be held responsible.
The suit was filed on October 5 through the applicant’s lawyers, Obor John and Tersagh Unande. They named the British High Commission, the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), as defendants.

Kanu and some IPOB members are being tried for alleged treason by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Kanu was on April 25, 2017 granted bail on health grounds after Senator Eyinanaya Abaribe, and two others stood surety for him..

His whereabouts has however remained an issue of concern after Nigeria soldiers allegedly invaded his home on September 14.

His lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, had in a suit filed before Federal High Court in Abuja on September 26, accused the Army of abducting Kanu or possibly killed him. He argued that Kanu had not been seen since the invasion of his home, during which shots were fired, people died and some injured.

In another development, former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, had claimed that Kanu had escaped to Britain through Malaysia.

Kenneth, who appeared to have favoured Orji Kalu’s position, is therefore requesting that the Federal Government be ordered to repatriate Kanu so that he can face his trial, which resumes on October 17.

“Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, representing the good people of Abia South Senatorial District of Abia State; Tochukwu Uchendu and Jewish Chief High Priest Immanuel -El Shalom Oka-Ben Madu perfected the bail bond which facilitated the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Upon the perfection of the bail and consequent released of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from prison custody, Mazi Kanu has, to the best of my knowledge, breached all the bail conditions to wit; granting press interviews while on bail, participating in any rally, or being found in a crowd of more than ten persons in the course of the bail,” Kenneth stated in a supporting affidavit.

Justice John Tsoho has been assigned the case and October 12 has been fixed for its first mention.
