KENYA: Al-Shabab militants behead 9 men in overnight attack on community

A village in the coastal district of Lamu in Kenya was attacked by al-Shabab militants who reportedly beheaded no less than nine members of the community in an overnight attack.

A witness, who asked not to be named, confirmed the death toll to Reuters news agency.

“They raided Jima and Pandanguo villages and killed nine men. They were slaughtered like chickens, using knives,” said the witness.

According to local police, the incident is coming days after the armed group killed three police officers in an attack on a nearby village.

Moments after the incident, President Uhuru Kenyatta in a televised address on Saturday morning spoke of “an unfortunate incident this morning, which we are assessing”. He also promised there would be “no vacuum in securing our country”.
