KENYA: Cops who killed girl, baby in vote-related violence to appear in court

Kenyan police authorities have revealed that the cops involved in the killing of an eight-year-old girl and a six-month-old baby in vote-related violence would be charged to court soon.

According to a police spokesman, investigations into the alleged killings have been concluded with human rights groups claiming that at least 66 people have died in bloodshed associated with the August election, which was later voided by the Supreme Court.

In the first incident which occurred on August 12, Stephanie Moraa, an 8-year-old girl died after being hit by a stray bullet as police fired to disperse protesters in the Nairobi slum of Mathare.

The other incident saw the death of six-month-old Samantha Pendo who was killed after her parents said she was teargassed and clubbed by police who invaded their home in Kisumu looking for protesters.

Kenya’s main opposition leader Raila Odinga has revealed in an interview that mainstream Kenyans feel deeply cheated over the outcome of the last presidential election and are about now toying with the idea of secession.

Odinga who boycotted the Oct. 25 election because he said it would be unfair, leaving President Uhuru Kenyatta to win with 98 per cent of the vote, while speaking with Reuters in Nairobi also noted that the biggest problem in Kenya right now is exclusion.

And in a last minute move that opens the door to legal scrutiny of the vote, a former lawmaker has filed a petition at Kenya’s Supreme Court challenging Kenyatta’s victory in last month’s presidential election
