Wafula Chebukati, the chairman Kenyan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has stated that he is not sure that the rescheduled presidential election slated for October 26 will be free and fair.

Citing divisions in the commission and interference from politicians, Chebukati said; “Ironically, the very people, political leaders, who are supposed to build the nations have become the greatest threat to the peace and stability of the nation.”

His comments are coming a day after Roselyn Akombe, the commissioner for the IEBC fled the country for the United States over fears that the rescheduled election would not be credible.

In a statement from New York, dated Tuesday, Akombe said that the “commission has become a party to the current crisis” and was “under siege”.

However, the incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta is undeterred by Akombe’s decision to flee the country and has restated his commitment to the poll which will take place next week.

The election board said it has conducted some reforms and the vote will go ahead with seven candidates including Raila Odinga on the ballot.
