KENYA: Headteacher of collapsed school which killed 8, injured 60 others, detained, arraigned in court

The owner of Precious Talent School in Kenya where a collapsed classroom killed eight students, and injured over 60 others, has been arraigned in court over the incident.

Mr Moses Ndirangu appeared before a magistrate court on Friday in connection with Monday’s tragedy and before the end of court proceedings, Prosecutors asked for him to be detained while they completed investigations into the cause of the accident.

The school proprietor was initially arrested on Thursday and will be detained for 15 days pending investigations into the cause of the tragedy.

Recall that the unfortunate incident happened some minutes after students of the school resumed school for the week.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened before 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT) as dozens of children were quickly rushed away from the scene with Kenya Red Cross transferring some children to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Rescuers have reportedly had difficulty getting to the school because of large crowds that have gathered nearby.

“So far we can confirm that we have seven fatalities and 57 others are in hospital,” a government spokesman told reporters outside the school in Dagoretti.

Reacting, the school’s director, Moses Ndirangu, blamed the collapse on the construction of a nearby sewer pipe which he says may have weakened the foundations of the school building.
