KENYA: Odinga insists on ‘No reforms, No elections’, asks supporters to boycott re-run poll

Ahead of Kenya’s Thursday presidential election re-run, the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, has asked his supporters to boycott the poll. He said there was nothing yet to show that the poll would not be a sham.

Odinga, who has since the Kenya apex court nullified the initial election result and ordered for a re-run, continued to rally his supporters with the slogan “No reforms, No elections”, is contending that the country’s authorities had failed to reform the body which conducted the August’s poll.

Odinga’s supporters had also on Monday took to the street in the western city of Kisumu to protest against the re-run election. They called for the postponement of the poll until there were clear changes in the country’s electoral system.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta, while campaigning on Monday, assured that there was going to be adequate security during the election. He added that anyone who tried to disrupt voting “will see what will happen to them”.

Incumbent President Kenyatta emerged winner of the August election but a ruling by Kenyan Supreme Court annulled the outcome of the election over what it deemed clear illegalities and irregularities in the conduct of the election. The court had then ordered for a re-run of the election.
