KENYA: Opposition supporter killed in Kisumu, votes delayed in 4 counties

There was chaos in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu as supporters of Raila Odinga tried to stop Thursday’s elections forcing police to retaliate by shooting one man dead and injuring three others during protests in the western city.

“A young man, aged 17 or 18, was brought in heavily bleeding. We were giving him blood but he succumbed,” said Henry Omosa, head nurse for casualty unit.

“The young man was one of four people admitted to the hospital on Thursday with gunshot wounds that occurred during clashes between police and protesters,” he said.

In a related development, voting was hampered by “security challenges” in a number of places and would be delayed until Oct. 28, Kenya’s election commission revealed.

According to head of the election commission, Wafula Chebukati, the areas where voting would be delayed included Homa Hay, Kisumu, Migori and Siaya – all in the opposition stronghold of western Kenya.
