KILLINGS: Jolted to action by criticisms, Buhari reacts

The presidency has confirmed scheduled visits by President Muhammadu Buhari to four troubled states namely; Yobe, Taraba, Benue, Zamfara and Rivers States.

The visit is coming after President Buhari faced a backlash when he was pictured in Kano on Saturday for Governors Ganduje and Ajimobi’s children’s wedding.

The activities of killer herdsmen, terrorist Boko Haram, and criminals have either led to loss of lives, properties or kidnappings in the mentioned states.

Among other state Buhari is scheduled to visit are Zamfara and Rivers states.

This development is coming on the heels of embarrassing criticisms that have continued to trail President Buhari’s failure to visit Dapchi, Yobe State, where 110 schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram two weeks ago.

Before the kidnapping of the Dapchi schoolgirls, many Nigerians had also wondered why Buhari had failed to visit Benue where 73 Nigerians were killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen on New Year Day, as well as Rivers State where many residents were killed on New Year day by criminal elements.

In Zamfara over 50 people were killed by suspected herdsmen just like in Taraba and Benue, which also witnessed numerous killings which seem to go unhindered despite deployment of soldiers in the states.

Only on Sunday, Pastor of Latter Rain Assembly and Buhari’s onetime running mate openly wondered what Buhari was doing at the wedding in Kano when 110 Dapchi schoolgirls are still in the custody of the terrorists.

However, in a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Monday, Buhari said he would be visiting the affected states.

The statement read, “In view of recent terrorist attacks, criminal activities and communal clashes in some States leading to tragic loss of lives and kidnapping of 110 schoolgirls, President Muhammadu Buhari immediately tasked the Armed Forces and other Security agencies to compile comprehensive reports on the various incidents.

“Having received and studied the Reports, the President has decided to undertake an on the spot assessment of the various occurrences and to meet and console the communities affected.

“From today, March 5, he will visit Taraba, and subsequently Benue, Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers states.

“President Buhari has been receiving daily briefings, and has been in constant touch with the Governors, and has been updated with situation reports.

“The President calls on all Nigerians especially those in the affected areas to cooperate fully with the Security Agencies to enable them curb the spate of crimes, bring those responsible to justice and prevent further occurrences.”

Meanwhile, the president according to reports arrived Taraba State today for an unscheduled visit.
