Knife man shouting 'Allahu Akbar' stabs woman to death in Australia
According to police reports, a 29-year-old knife-wielding man has stabbed a woman to death and wounded two others at a backpackers’ hotel in Australia.
Police say the assailant who was identified as a Frenchman shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) as he stabbed the British woman to death and inflicted knife wounds on two others.
Further reports revealed that the attacker was in Australia on a valid tourist visa and had no known links to radical groups such as Islamic State.
The dead woman was identified as Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21; from the English county of Derbyshire, while one of the wounded victims, who is in critical condition after the attack which occurred in Queensland state, is 30-year-old British man.
“Initial inquiries indicate that comments which may be construed of being of an extremist nature were made by the alleged offender and we are not ruling out any motive,” Queensland Police Service Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski told reporters.
“This person appears to have acted alone,” he said. “He is a visitor to Australia and has no known local connections, however investigations are ongoing.”
