There is palpable fear in and around the main train station in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille, after a knife-wielding man stabbed two people to death including one woman.
According to the French interior ministry, the incident which occurred at 1:45pm local time (11:45 GMT) on Sunday witnessed the killing of the assailant who was shot dead in the attack.
Xavier Tarabeux, a local prosecutor, says the assailant has been shot by soldiers patrolling there, while Marseille police are urging people to avoid the area around Saint-Charles station.”Two victims have been stabbed to death,” Olivier de Mazieres, the regional police chief, Tarabeux said.
Last August, a car also crashed into two bus shelters in the city of Marseille killing one person and injuring another in two different incidents French police say.
The motive of the driver is yet to be determined but French police say it is not terror linked.
