Kogi Speaker bows to pressure,  resigns

Peace might have finally returned to the troubled Kogi State House of Assembly, as the Speaker, Hon. Momoh Jimoh,Tuesday, threw in the towel.

In his stead, Hon. Umar Imam was named speaker.

It would be recalled that the House of Assembly had been engulfed in crisis for months over the removal of Jimoh and other principal officers of the assembly by a group of five lawmakers.

The assembly was thus divided into G-15 and G-5 factions, with both groups laying claim to the leadership of the state legislature.

The crisis got to a head when the National Assembly ordered the assembly complex sealed and also took over the functions of the assembly.

However, the G-5, with the alleged support of the state Governor, Yahaya Bello, defied the order of the National Assembly, as it continued to sit under military protection.

A semblance of peace returned to the House of Assembly when the two sides were called together and concessions made by both sides.

According inside sources, one of the concessions was for the speaker, Momoh Jimoh to resign his position in the spirit of equity since he comes from the same senatorial district with Governor Bello.

In return, other principal officers belonging to Jimoh’s G-15 are to keep their positions.
