KROOS: Madrid targeting 'top four'

Following their recent poor run in the league, Real Madrid midfielder, Toni Kroos has admitted that his side’s objective has been lowered to finishing in La Liga’s top four.

Real fell further adrift in the title race after a 1-0 defeat to Villarreal on Saturday, and Kroos confessed the club had to revise their targets, even as Barcelona moved 19 points ahead of their clasico rivals on Sunday.

“First of all, we have to think about our position at the moment,” the midfielder told BeIN Sports.

“We have to focus on qualifying for the Champions League next season. I think that should be the objective for the rest of the season.

“That’s because 16 points (now 19) is very big. It’s not the time to think about anything that isn’t the next game and not picking up points in order to get closer to our objective, which is to be among the top four.”

Saturday’s defeat meant Madrid have now failed to win their last three league games (two defeats and one draw), and the two defeats happened at the Bernabeu.

Kroos went on to write on Twitter after the game: “It’s true that this is a difficult time for us and all Madridistas. But everybody who says we played a bad game today has no idea of football. It was a good performance and we have to continue. Still a lot to win this season!”

The European champions will hope to return to winning ways when they travel away to face Leganes in the first-leg quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey on Thursday.
