KWARA: All waterworks shut down over N24m electricity debt

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State on Monday ordered the Ministry of Water Resources to deliver constant water supply to “specific areas” of Ilorin within 100 days.

The governor also ordered the ministry to ensure that all the dams in the state are working, promising to support them. This comes as the General Manager of Kwara State Water Corporation revealed that all the waterworks in the State had shut down over N24m debt.

Abdulrazaq gave the order during his unscheduled visit to Agba Dam, Asa Dam Water Works and Western Reservoir (Adewole) in Ilorin, lamenting that no part of the state gets constant water supply despite the over N6bn already sunk into the water reticulation project.

According to him, there might be “house cleaning” if the ministry failed to deliver.

He said: “We have a mandate to deliver water to our people within the next 100 days. For a start, I want to see constant water supply in specific areas of Ilorin, it may be Ilorin East, South or West or anywhere.

“We want action. Our people want water. No part of Ilorin or anywhere in this state do people have water. Raise a memo to state what the problems are and what’s needed to fix them.

“We need to think out of the box. I’m serious about having water in our homes within 100 days. We have the mandate to deliver water to our people,” he said.

General manager of the corporation, Alhaji Yahaya Tunde, however informed the governor that all the waterworks in the state had been disconnected from power supply because they were owing the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company at least N24m. According to him, they have a monthly electricity bill of N9.7m
