Kwara govt shuts schools over fear of Coronavirus

The Kwara State Government on Wednesday announced the closure of its public schools with effect from next Monday.

The government’s decision to close the schools is due to increasing cases of COVID -19 in the country.

Nigeria now has eight confirmed cases of Coronavirus after five people tested positive for the disease on Wednesday.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, said this in a terse statement in Ilorin, the state capital.

The governor’s spokesman appealed to people not to panic but maintain basic principles of hygiene and safety measures earlier announced by the state’s Ministry of Health.

He said: “I can confirm that Kwara State will be shutting down schools from Monday, March 23rd. It is part of the efforts to contain the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We urge our people to maintain the highest level of hygiene and to remain calm and adhere to all safety measures earlier announced by the Kwara State Ministry of Health and other national bodies.”

He said the government would release soon release to the public details on the closure of schools.

With this development, a total of 10 states in the country had announced the closure of schools over the Coronavirus pandemic.

Others are Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States.
