La Liga considering playing some matches outside Spain

A spokesperson of the Spanish La Liga has revealed that officials of the League are in support of the idea of playing some matches abroad.

The discussions follow a summer when Barcelona played Real Madrid as part of the International Champions Cup pre-season tournament.

It was only the second time the clubs had met outside Spain and attracted a capacity crowd in excess of 66,000 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The spokesman, who also said La Liga wants “to grow the international appeal” by the move added that, “last season more than 2.5 billion people around the world tuned in to watch La Liga.

“Clearly, La Liga is global entertainment and we want to grow its international appeal.

“As part of that effort we are discussing the option of playing some of the league matches outside of Spain.”

President of the Spanish topflight, Javier Tebas, was also quoted to have said, “the discussions are still in early stages but, as La Liga, we support the idea.”

It is reported that fixtures could be held outside Spain as early as 2018.
