La Liga: Sevilla held by Sporting, Madrid on top as Barca continue chase

Spanish giants Sevilla continued with their bad run in recent times with a disappointing result as they were held 0-0 at home by Sporting Gijon on Sunday, leaving them fourth in La Liga.

The Jorge Sampaoli side’s winless run stretched to five games in all competitions despite dominating throughout the game at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

League leaders Real Madrid are two points clear at the top with 10 games remaining to end of season after overcoming Alaves 3-0 to record a fourth straight league win.

Karim Benzema put the Zinedine Zidane’s side ahead on the half hour mark, and held unto it to half time as Deyverson and Edgar wasted chances to equalise for Alaves.

Isco made it 2-0 for Madrid five minutes before stoppage time, and Nacho headed home the third after Gareth Bale’s free-kick had rebounded off the bar into his path three minutes later.

Barcelona overcame the absence of top scorer Lionel Messi to earn a comfortable 4-1 win at Granada.

Luis Suarez’s exquisite lob just before half-time opened the scoring before on-loan Chelsea midfielder Jeremie Boga equalised with a composed finish on 50 minutes.

Paco Alcacer restored Barca’s lead 14 minutes later. Ivan Rakitic’s deflected finish then made it 3-1 few minutes before stoppage time before Neymar scored the fourth seconds before the final whistle.

In the other game on Sunday, Valencia thumped Deportivo 3-0.
