Relief as kidnapped VP, teacher, students breath air of freedom

Gunmen who stormed Igbo Nla Model College in Epe, Lagos, abducting four students, a teacher and the school principal, have issued a 48 hour ultimatum to the parents of the victims in their custody to come up with the ransom placed on each of them.

The ultimatum is coming after the kidnappers informed the families that the health condition of one of the schoolboys, reported to be sick, had worsened and the ransom placed on the victims had been reduced to N6 million each.

According to a source, the kidnappers put a call through to the families concerned that the condition of the sick school boy had worsened even after they (kidnappers) tried to treat him themselves.

“The men called on Monday and said they gave the family till Wednesday to pay the ransom. While the family members begged them, the kidnappers let them realise that the health of the boy had worsened, but they would not release him without a good ransom. They had come down from N3.5m to N1m ransom.” the source said.

Continuing, the source added that “The boy’s family has been able to raise some money and they were begging the gunmen to accept what they had. I hope the kidnappers will have mercy and consider the condition of the sick pupil, and let him go.”

When contacted, SP Dolapo Badmos, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, informed that rescue operation is ongoing.

The affected families are reported to have raised three-quarter of the ransom according to another source close to the family of one of the victims.

“It is true that they called to warn the parents that the boy’s health is deteriorating. They told them to bring the ransom before Wednesday. The family has been able to raise three-quarter of the money. They are rallying round for the remaining sum. Nobody from any quarters is assisting them to raise the ransom. They are begging the kidnappers and trying to meet the deadline.” The source said.
