LAGOS: Yoruba, Hausa clash claims 2 lives

A tragic scene played out at the Gida Panli, Kotomola, in the New Garage area of Ojota, Lagos State, when no less than two people were feared killed after a clash between Yoruba and Hausa youths.

Reports say the clash broke out after an Hausa youth in the area reportedly beat up his Yoruba counterpart over an alleged misunderstanding between the two of them.

The action by the Hausa youth did not go down well with other Yoruba youths in the area, as they moved to avenge the assault on the Yoruba youth which later snowballed into a deadly fracas.

Reports say the clash which lasted for two days also witnessed the destruction of motorcycles and disrupted commercial activities in the area.

A commercial driver identified as Wale Ajayi who witnessed the incident said; “There was a misunderstanding yesterday (Thursday) between two youths, one Yoruba, the other Hausa. The Hausa boy reported the other guy to some area boys in the area and they settled the issue.

“Afterwards, he went to attack the Yoruba man and beat him up. That infuriated the hoodlums popularly called area boys who then attacked the Hausa man and the clash broke out. Traders had to vacate the area and many Hausa people had been chased away.

“I learnt some people were killed, but I am not sure of the number yet,” he added.

However, the Lagos State Police Command through the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, denied the death of the two victims following the incident.

He said; “There was no casualty recorded during the incident.”

SP Oti also revealed that the suspects arrested after the incident were being interrogated.

“The CP has ordered a massive deployment of policemen in the scene to ensure peace returns. A number of arrests were made and the suspects are being interrogated. There was no casualty in terms of death or injuries,” he said.
