Lagosians to pay 50% more for BRT, LAGBUS

The Lagos State Government has approved the increase of fares by between 20 and 50 per cent on different routes for LAGBUS and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus services in the state.

The upward increase will now see Lagosians who troop out daily to queue up in order to enjoy traffic free ride around Lagos which is helped by the use of dedicated lanes made especially for the buses, pay more for bus tickets.

Speaking to newsmen in Alausa, Mr Abiodun Dabiri, the Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority said the increase will take effect from the 1st of March, 2017.

Mr Dabiri while citing reasons for the increase said, resources spent on fuel had gone up 71 per cent, oil by 64 per cent and tyre by 90 per cent, which is threatening operations.

“In view of this and with government’s responsibility to avert a collapse of the franchise scheme, which currently serves over 500,000 commuters daily, government had to consider request by the operators for an upward review of bus fares.” He said.

Mr Dabiri appealed to commuters to bear with the increase which has become inevitable stating that operators have also been advised to improve their cost effectiveness and value.

“It will be difficult to pass the entire cost of operations to the consumers, bearing in mind that a lot of the users are in the low income bracket”, he added.
