Lassa fever outbreak leaves 1 dead, 2 quarantined

An outbreak of Lassa fever in Taraba has been recorded after the state Commissioner of Health, Innocent Vakkai revealed that at least one person has been confirmed dead, and two others have been quarantined and kept for observation.

Speaking about the outbreak, Vakkai said; “One person died and two others quarantined and their blood samples have already been taken to Irrua Specialists’ Hospital in Edo State for further confirmation.”

He urged the public not to panic as the state government has responded to the outbreak quickly in order for it not to spread.

The commissioner urged anyone who witnesses nasal bleeding as well as bleeding through the anus and mouth to go to the nearest hospital as they are among the symptoms of the fever.

“People usually get infected with the Lassa Virus after exposure to infected rodents, while person to person transmission occurs through direct contact with the sick person.”

“Precautionary measures include putting food in rodent proof containers and wearing protection such as masks, gloves and gowns among others,” he added.
