At last! Jammeh finally accepts to step down

Gambia’s long-time leader Yahya Jammeh has finally accepted to step down following last-ditch diplomatic efforts made by the leaders of Guinea and Mauritania who both arrived in the capital, Banjul, to get him to cede power.

Embattled Jammeh has now called for an extension to the midday deadline served by ECOWAS asking that he be given till 4pm to vacate office for his now exiled opponent Adama Barrow.

Confirming the development, the twitter handle of Charles Onyango-Obbot, a journalist ‏@cobbo3 said “ Jammeh asks for deadline extension – from midday (local time) to 4pm! He’s not done packing #Gambia.

Had he refused to step down, ECOWAS troops which entered Gambia, hours after Barrow was forced to hold his inauguration as president in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, were awaiting orders to force Jammeh out if he refused to relinquish power.
