Late Giroud goal secure win for Arsenal at Red Star Belgrade

Published

Olivier Giroud’s stunning late strike gave Arsenal victory at 10-man Crvena Zvezda and kept them firmly on course to reach the Europa League knockout stage.

A number of fringe Arsenal players were given a chance in the game, apparently to impress and claim a regular place in Arsene Wenger’s first-team.

Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were among the starlets to line-up for the Gunners in Serbia as the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil sat out the fixture.

But the difference was made on 85 minutes with Giroud’s overhead flick hooked the ball into the net minutes after Milan Rodic was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Francis Coquelin.

Arsenal are top of Group H with nine points, four ahead of second-placed BATE Borisov.

This win was their third in as many Europa League games and a welcome lift after a disappointing defeat by Watford in the Premier League last weekend.

Arsenal will play away to Everton on Sunday, and their next Europa League group game will be November 2, when they host Red Star Belgrade at the Emirates.
