Late Villarreal goal stun Real Madrid

La Liga Champions Real Madrid were coneemned to continue on their poor run in this season after a late goal by Villarreal handed them a 1-0 defeat at their Bernabeu on Saturday.

Both sides were heading to a stalemate when Pablo Fornals fired home to cause a lot of scenes at the stadium in the 87th minute.

The defeat means Madrid have now failed to win their last three league games (two defeats and one draw).

Also they have now lost their last two home games in the league.

They are currently fourth in La Liga on 32 points,16 points off leaders Barcelona who can stretch the lead with a win away to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

The European champions will hope to return to winning ways when they travel away to face Leganes in the first-leg quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey on Thursday.

Speaking after the game, Zinedine Zidane said: “In football there are two teams, and what you must do is score a goal more than the opponent. We tried to do that today.”
