Lawmaker challenges Kenyatta’s victory in court as legal scrutiny of polls begin
Over a week after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the last presidential poll rerun after garnering 98% in a one-way election, his win is being contested in court.
In a last minute move that opens the door to legal scrutiny of the vote, a former lawmaker filed a petition at Kenya’s Supreme Court on Monday challenging Kenyatta’s victory in last month’s presidential election.

Kenyatta’s closest rival Raila Odinga did not contest the repeat vote on Oct. 26 saying he doubted if it would be free and fair even as Kenya’s Supreme Court has until Nov. 14 to rule on election petitions and if it upholds the result, Kenyatta will be sworn in on Nov. 28.
Divisions have continued to run deep in the east African country after Odinga rejected the outcome of the elections which he described as a sham saying it should not have been held.
Ever since Kenyatta was declared winner of August elections, about 50 people have been declared dead as Kenya has been dogged with political unrest which has also taken its toll on it economy.
