'At least one policeman dies every day in Nigeria'

An average of one policeman has died every day in the last three months in Nigeria, while carrying out their duties in the fight against crime.

According to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Ibrahim Idris, about 128 policemen have died while fighting crime in the last three months.

Idris in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Don Awunah, in Abuja on Wednesday, said “In the past three months, the Force has lost 128 personnel in various parts of the country due to activities of undesirable elements in our communities”, the police boss revealed.

He continued, that “These line of duty resultant deaths, occasioned by unwarranted attacks by religious bigots, bandits, hoodlums and militants must be reversed and the trend halted,”

The IGP while lamenting the wanton destruction of police infrastructure and public assets, noted, “The recent cases in Dankamoji village in Maradun local government area of Zamfara, Abagana in Anambra, and in Okrika waterways in Rivers where personnel were killed, arms carted away, structures and equipment destroyed are cases in point,” he stated.
