LIBERIA ELECTION: Opposition party set to take poll fraud claims to Supreme Court

The first democratic transfer of power in Liberia dating over 70 years could be extended by months as the opposition Liberty Party has decided to take its claims of election fraud to the Supreme Court.

“We will take our case to the Supreme Court any time this week,” Charles Brumskine of the Liberty Party told Reuters. “We were not surprised by the ruling. NEC were the defendants and judge at the same time.”

The move by Brumskine is coming days after the electoral commission ruled on Friday that the first-round of polls staged on October 10 which saw ex football star George Weah and Vice-President Joseph Boakai emerge as the two front-runners was fair.

Days after the election, Brumskine said the first round was marred by widespread fraud, and the Supreme Court ordered the National Elections Commission (NEC) to investigate his claims.

The presidential election run-off earlier scheduled for November 7, which has now been postponed indefinitely had pitched former soccer star George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai in the second round of polls.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was also of the opinion that democracy in her country is under threat days after Justice Francis Korkpor of the Supreme Court indefinitely halted the presidential election run-off earlier scheduled for November 7.
