Liberia’s election commission sets Dec. 26 date for run-off vote
After series of investigations into allegations of irregularities and fraud in the first round of elections, Liberia’s National Elections Commission has set December 26 as new date for presidential run-off polls.
The announcement was made by the National Elections Commission (NEC) during a press briefing on Tuesday, saying official campaigning must end by December 24.
“We call on the two political parties in the run-off election … to go about their campaign in a peaceful manner,” said Jerome Korkoya, NEC chairman.
Early last month, Justice Francis Korkpor of the Supreme Court in Liberia indefinitely halted the presidential election run-off earlier scheduled for November 7, which had pitched former soccer star George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai in the second round of polls.

Reading the ruling to a packed court room, Justice Korkpor said the polls had been postponed indefinitely while the National Elections Commission investigates allegations of irregularities and fraud in the first round.
He said the electoral body had been proceeding “wrongly and illegally” to conduct a runoff between Weah and Boakai.
Charles Brumskine of the Liberty Party who came third in the first round of elections is contesting the outcome of the election result which saw Weah emerge the front-runner with 39%, while his closest opponent, Vice-President Boakai came second with 29%.
